How hydraulic system works in wind turbine?
Hydraulic systems are used extensively in wind turbines, notably in the pitch, yaw and brake control systems.
The process of turning wind into electricity involves a drivetrain turned by a rotor of two or three blades and related equipment. While small turbines often have fixed rotor blades – they do not pitch – larger turbines require blades that pitch and so are mounted on bearings. To drive each blade to its best pitch position requires a hydraulic cylinder, motor, reservoir and associated equipment.
Hydraulic cylinders are being used in pitch control systems, allowing the angle of the rotor blades to be varied quickly and precisely through a cam action. The blades are either turned into the wind to increase the rotational speed if the wind speed falls or out of the wind if wind speed increases. This is typically achieved by installing three pitch control systems in the hub of the turbine, one for each blade. Efficiency is likewise enhanced by enabling continual adjustment of the yaw, or rotational position of the nacelle. In the same way that output is optimised by tilting the angle of the blades so that they are facing into the wind, the nacelle too must be rotated about its vertical axis in response to the changing wind direction.
A hydraulic control system controls the pitch angle of the turbine blades, hence controlling the speed and power production.
